Don't we have to hate them, in addition to them hating us, for it to really be a rivalry. It's more of them wanting to beat a team with a lot of prestige and history.

Great post, Big L, and Texas-Oklahoma is another unique case.

These teams (4) list Texas as #1 football rival: Oklahoma, A&M, TTech, Baylor (maybe?)
These teams (5) list Minnesota as #1 hockey rival: UND, Wisc, UM-D, SCS, Mankato

I can't think of any other teams in a similar situation of having so many "pretend" #1 rivalries

If they are from Minnesota, they probably dreamed of playing for the Gophers, and didn't get that chance, so it's a big game for them. I'm not trying to be cocky or anything, history doesn't win games, but I think that may be where that rivalry feeling comes from.

I think that they believe WE are their biggest rival but they are most certainly not ours. I do hate when we lose to them...although I enjoy when the other Minnesota schools have good squads especially my alma mater, MSU.

No surprise, but St. Clown State student paper has an article titled "Huskies vs. Gophers is a premier rivalry"

How come everyone thinks they have a huge rivalry with us? I bet UM-D and Mankato would say the same thing.

Should we let them know that we care a lot more about beating North Dakota and Wisconsin....or should we let them live in their own little dream world?
