Rodney Williams Chooses Top Three |
Lead | ||
|
-Gophers reps who watched Rodney Williams and Royce White at the Sabes Invitational tourney last weekend were hoping that the latter wouldn't be the only
local prep to sign with the Gophers. Williams, an athletic prep forward from Robbinsdale Cooper, said he's still weighing his options. But he told me that
he's narrowed his choices down to three schools: Kansas (no official offer yet), Minnesota and another school that he didn't name. "I'm still
deciding," he said.

Haha, I'll take that as we are his front-runner that has offered, he has not narrowed the list down to three, and if Kansas offers he will quickly commit
to them.

If Rodney is as great a player as you who have seen him say he is, why does he only have offers from Minnesota and an unnamed? It's so chic to get 8th
graders to commit and he's available next year. Are his grades that atrocious that he's fallen off the grid? Is his game one-dimensional? What
happens if he graduates from high school and actually qualifies? Will he be a hot commodity then? Is Kansas actually interested in him? What gives....?

He's been offered by Wisconsin, Iowa, Miami and Iowa St. among others. His grades are definitely an issue otherwise a lot more programs would have thrown
their hat in the ring. Rodney is definitely not one dimensional and has many great aspects to his game.

I think (and hope) this kid wants to stay close to home. It was reported that his family is opposed to him going away from home to prep school. Kansas is
attractive because they win but this kid can be the hometown hero. Minnesotans can idolize their sports heroes with the best of them.

Trust me, the fanaticism of Gopher hoops is not even on the same planet as Kansas.
What we experienced in 1997 was incredible and I can't wait until we have it again. But head to head comparisons of fanaticism versus KU is not going to be a battle we'll win. We have a lot to offer a kid like Rodney that KU doesn't, but comparable fanaticism isn't it. Go Gophers!!

Everything that I have heard reported here and other places has led me to believe that Rodney is a bit of a quiet person. why would he want to go to KU and be
treated like a celebrity? He may not have the personality that meshes well with that sort of atmosphere.

It's just that in MN, celebrities are generally treated with respect and dignity, while in certain other places (not mentioning any particular Prairie State) they are treated like a bone in a kennel of starving dogs. You're adored, but constantly chewed on.

I think he's an extrememly exciting player - so athletic, exactly the kind of player I love watching.
As for the school stuff, I would take his comments with a grain of salt. I spoke to him in March, and he told me he had no preference...but when I nailed him down, he said he was being recruited the hardest by Miami, MN and WI. I think Rodney is just really focused on playing ball, and lets his Dad handle a lot of the recruiting stuff. His Dad seemed to think it was MN, WI and IA. He also said his game would fit in best at MN. Trust me, he doesn't just have offers to MN and the unnamed...I just think he's not wrapped up in it. I, personally, would love to see him wear a Maroon and gold jersey and watch his style of play for 4 years! P.S. I agree with Bleed...the kind of fans and following we have, cannot even come close to comparing with KU, and that was only for the small glance I saw during the Final Four. |

Tubby's the guy | #9 | ||

If Rodney is a quiet person and needs a family atmosphere where love and discipline (when the Tubby "stare" is for you, you gotta remember he
"loves" you!) go hand-in-hand then Tubby's team is the place to be. Close to home and where he already has a supportive friend (Royce) is better
for him, too. As so many know, just going away to college is a big enough challenge in itself. Add-in the over-zealous media and fan-base of a
(KS,KY,NC,etc) and even an experienced player like Jasper (Coach BG) wants to go home. Right now the Gophers may not be mentioned in the same breath as those
above, but everyone is watching for the transformation to take place. Rodney could be a part of that.
