You gotta like how this defense is playing, not giving up the big play today, tackling well overall and creating turnovers. Give lots of credit to Ted Roof - and lock him up so he can't get away anytime soon.

I'm all for doing what we can to keep this guy... The reality with any of these coaching contracts though, is they can bolt at any point if something
better comes along - especially another head coaching opportunity if he keeps this going. Hopefully he likes it here for now.

If he gets a good HC opportunity he's gone. That said I don't think he'll get a major BCS job any time soon, maybe a lower level one. Don't
think for a minute that Brew doesn't have a list of guys to call right away if he bounces though. I trust Brew's hires although we dodged a bullet with
that Clemson OC who SUCKS and Whithers wasn't a great fit

I think Brewster has more influence on this D than we think although Roof certainly deserves much credit. Interesting that Duke beat Vandy today to move to
.500. Can read this as "they are better without him" or that they are doing pretty well with the kids he was able to recruit ...
I don't see Roof getting a big time job of any sort, though you never know what he's looking for ... some guys see themselves as head coaches and want to get back to that role ASAP. |

I agree, Roof won't be getting any major job offers just yet, not so soon after a failed tenure at Duke. I doubt money will be an issue either, as it seems
we're pretty commited to competitive compensation for our assistants.
It's interesting that both of our coordinators both failed as head coaches, but they're obviously very good as coordinators. |

Defense is about coaching but it's also about talent.

Roof, Brewster and all the coaches are doing a great job with a still young team. Think what a couple of good recruiting years will bring in talent. I hope Brewster will want to be another Joe Pa, but here at Minnesota in the college game, where recruiting is key and the players are young enough (and not rich enough) to still be motivated. |

He led Central Washington to a 54-9-1 (.852 winning %) record in six years, advancing to the post-season in each year as the head coach. In four years at Northern Iowa, he was 29-15 (.659 winning %). So, in his head coaching career, he is 83-24-1 (.773 winning %). That isn't exactly failing.

But you need to be able to coach the talent you have. Any DC will look better with better talent. The best coaches get the most out of the talent they have,
regardless of what they have to work with. If Withes WAS a genious coordinator he wouldn't have had a killer "D" last year. If he could coach
the talent he had, we would have had a better record than 1-11.

what makes you say that? Honest question.
Brewster mentioned when he was hired he would look for talented OC and DC candidates becuase he didn't have experience. I give Brewster credit for getting Roof into the fold, but if he had any influence over the D, we wouldn't have been as bad as last year and there wouldn't be so much press over the drills being run in practice, this year. Roof's decisions on personel have been flawless (Sherels and Campbell switching positions for example). Brewster enabled the changes, but Roof has made them work better than they should have. He has done with the defense what I expected to see last year which is steady improvement week over week. Yes he has more talent to work with, but we're not talking about going from a high school team to the '86 bears D here. We went from uncoached talent that was marginal to coached marginal/average talent. The difference this year has more to do with coaching than talent. We need to lock him up. The offense continues to struggle but Roof has coached the Defense up to cover the deficiencies on offense so far. Roof is the most important recruit for next year, period. He may not have a ton of HC offers, but he will be approached about being a DC by bigger football schools after what he's done this year. He's coached a middling talented defense amazingly and proven his success as a DC at G Tech was more than just a fluke. |

Maybe Roof found out he didn't really like being a head coach. Some guys like Dunbar enjoy coordinating better. Plus with Brewsters formula of paying the
coordinators so well, maybe he stays awhile. One can hope, right?

Still think it's strange that a guy named "Roof" had a bad case of "Shingles." (Oh, Well!)
Hopefully, Brewster & Maturi will know what it takes to hold on to Roof and as many of the assistants as possible. Like any employer, they need to treat their employees like they themselves would want to be treated. That being said, if a better opportunity comes around for any of them I'm sure they'd have to look at the next job offer. |
